The pronouns iel and iels appeared in October 2021 in the Le Petit Robert dictionary.
They correspond to the unmanaged version of the pronouns he (s) and she (s).
These pronouns appeared in the 2010s via a proposal from the LGBT community in order to meet a need of some of its members who did not feel represented by the binary model il(s) and elle(s).
On the model of the pronoun on, in the current rules of the French language, the masculine is used to grant the neutral.
The pronouns iel and iels were added to the Web version of Le Petit Robert to meet a need of these visitors. To date, it has not been accepted and validated by the academies.
A debate, mainly carried by the right of the political spectrum, is underway on the subject.
